Holders The Legion put up an excellent performance to get the better of Clive Vale in this midweek Observer Cup group match.

Jon Meredith was the star as he claimed outstanding bowling figures of 4-0-18-5 which included a fine one-handed catch by Mark Busbridge to get rid of Vale skipper Steve Brook (27). He also held on to a skier off the bowling of Berwick Smith, while Hemant Thakral picked up 2-23.

Carl Brook (21), Darren Stamp (24) and Chris Kirkham (10 not out) contributed to the Vale total.

Both Legion opening batsman were soon back in the pavilion due to excellent spells from Ben Ridgeway (1-9) and Carl Brook (1-10).

Berwick Smith added a useful 10 but with wickets continually falling, it needed someone with a cool head to steady matters. Meredith was the man for the occasion and his 38 proved crucial before Mickey O'Callaghan (12 not out) hit the winning runs in the final over.
